How to Build a Road Bike #4 Hanging the Derailleurs

Step 4 – Hanging the Derailleurs
 
What you Need
Tools: 
  • Torque Wrench (TW-1 or TW-5)
  • Socket and Bit Set (SBS-1)
  • Hex Set (HXS-1.2) 
  • Park Polylube 1000 Lubricant (PPL-1)

  • Front Derailleur
  • Clamp on Front Derailleur Mounting Bracket (if required)
  • Rear Derailleur

Before you Get Started
  • Make sure your derailleurs are compatible with the number of gears on your crankset and cassette.
Installation
 

1.  Connect the front derailleur to the front derailleur-mounting bracket (braze on or clamp on) using the front derailleur-mounting bolt. Ensure the front derailleur cage is in line with the chain rings and that there is a 1-3mm gap between the top of the chain ring and the bottom of the front derailleur (see Figure 1).  See the video for additional information.

2.  Connect the front derailleur bolt using a 5mm hex.  Get it finger tight (see Figure 2).

3.  Torque the front derailleur bolt to the manufacturers recommended value using a torque wrench (see Figure 3).

4.  Apply a thin layer of lubrication to the rear derailleur threads (see Figure 4).

5.  Connect the rear derailleur to the rear derailleur hanger using a 5mm hex (see Figure 5).  Be sure to keep the B-Adjust washer tab above ledge on your rear derailleur hanger.  Please watch the rear derailleur video for additional information.

6.  Once finger tight, be sure to torque the rear derailleur to the manufacturers recommended value using a torque wrench (see Figure 6).

7.  You have now properly hung your front and rear derailleurs.

 
This completes the hanging of your derailleurs.
